REAL ID Act
A glimpse into the future of America

The Real ID act is one of the many scary things happening in this country these days. The very concept of being required to identify ourselves in any way is relatively recent.

There was no Social Security number until the 1930s. There weren't even driver's licenses before 1910. Prior to that, the only form of identification that most people had was a birth certificate. It's not like they ever needed to prove who they were though.

Now, you can't go into many public buildings without identification, you can't board many trains or buses (let alone planes!), you can't open a bank account or get a job. Why should it matter who I am when I want to work for a wage? Why should it matter who I am when I want to make exchange money of any form for transportation of any form? My name has nothing to do with my ability to perform a task and to be paid for performing that task, nor does it have anything to do with my right to exchange the fruits of my labor for other services, including transportation.

It truly frightens me to see this country waltzing care-free down this path of totalitarianism. This country was founded on exactly the opposite type of principals. The Jefferson memorial carries a large inscription, attributed to Thomas Jefferson, "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." Does that statement sound like the statement of a man who would stand by and let the private doings of Americans (or any people) be controlled by a government or anything else?

Fear is the tool of tyranny. By letting your fear drive you, you are letting others control your actions. Especially when our government is conspiring to create and cultivate those fears. To quote President Bush in his interview with 60 Minutes, "I can remember thinking that it's gonna take a monumental effort to keep the country's attention on this war". Here's a man who was willfully using fear to control the thoughts of the American people. We reelected this man. We let him control our minds. We let him grow our fear and we let him take our freedoms. Stop being afraid. Stop being controlled.

I have no intention of having a Real ID. I'm not sure what all implications that carries, or if I'll even be living in this country then the law takes effect.

"People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." --V
